Rear View Poses

The rear view is probably the most popular of all poses. As soon as man learned to paint guess what began to show up in paintings? That's right, back views, and probably because the back is much more interesting to paint. The invention of the camera gave artists a way to see the rear view for much longer periods of time than if the model sat for long periods of times.

Jean-Leon Gerome
Jean-Leon Gerome

Some artists, such as Jean-Leon Gerome, seemed to use the classical rear view more in his work than others. When viewing his wonderful paintings though it never seems to even be a factor because the quality of his work, by far, overrides any silly notion that he seemed to prefer the back view.

Non-artists do not seem to understand the value of a great back pose, especially females, who in general, have a very different view of the derriere especially when it's their own. Through the eyes of the artist, the beauty of a woman's curvature often includes the back view and doesn't really matter what the specific shape is, as long as it fits the overall figure. And that is the real beauty of the rear view!
